The rainy season on Karimunjawa is quiet. The boats slow down, the guesthouses empty out, and the island exhales. And every year, right at that moment, our English classrooms start to fill.
This year we opened the door to our largest cohort yet, 68 children in weekly kids' classes, and 42 adults working in tourism sharpening the English they use with guests all summer.
"When I speak English with a guest, they smile more, they stay longer, they come back. That is my whole business."
Why the season matters
For adults working in tourism, the low season is the only time they can commit to weekly classes. For kids, it is the time when after-school life slows enough for language practice to stick.
What's next
We are adding a third teacher next term and opening a specialised small-group class for homestay owners on Karimunjawa's smaller islands, together with our advisory board.
